So yesterday I got in the classroom and sat down at my usual spot. As I was chating with a friend, the teacher got into the class and brought his stuff to his desk. He then came to me and asked if I was “Gabrielle”. So he asked if we could talk. I got up and followed him to his desk, I knew what it was going to be about. So yeah, it was about my last essay I wrote in class. We had to write an argumentative essay on anything we wanted (see post entitled “Little Essay”). I wrote on the issue of “Is Jesus the Son of God, yes or no?” and gave three arguments for it (yes). My teacher told me he couldn’t mark my paper (so I got zero). Because I was addressing a question of faith, according to him, argumentating was irrelevant. He was really nice about it all and was not like trying to put me down, he told me the writing was good, but irrelevant for this work. He finished by telling me that we would be marked only for the 5 best in-class essays, and since this one was my sixth, I’d be alright anyways. Fine then. I did not argue and I kept my “Yeah I understand, it’s fine” type of attitude. I seriously did not care about the fact that I got zero, this essay was not worth much and I had already 5 other essays behind me. I went back to my desk and started thinking. I wondered if it was really true that my essay could not be marked. It’s true that I don’t know much about academic writing and I know my teacher knows much and is used to read a lot and etc. but I still think that my essay was an argumentative essay. If faith is a matter of opinion and beliefs, it is the same for topics like death penalty, uniforms in schools and all the other topics that were written on. It’s all a matter of opinion and beliefs, that’s why people have different views on these issues. Studies are conducted and surveys are made in order to either give weight to one side or the other side of an issue, that’s from there we get our arguments. I don’t really see why a question of faith could not be considered relevant for that type of essay. Because I state the issue and then provide arguements (backed with the Bible)… why can’t it be marked? Not sure. Maybe I don’t understand my teacher’s point of view about it all, the difference between faith and … world-related topics like “Should we legalized gay marriages” and the like. I don’t know. I do understand that if any person would write about some stuff in his religion, it’d be harder for everyone to relate, but still, to me it’s still an argumentative essay that could have been marked. But it’s alright, I’m fine with it. I just thought it was interesting.

ah those stupid rules on how you cant have an opinion on essays..sucks major bum bum..do you get to write something else?
Nope I don’t. But it’s fine.
man..sucks..i hope it wasnt worth a big part of your grade. and your teacher got to read the truth.
No it was not at all. We were marked on 5 of the best in-class essays we’d be writing during the whole semester, so the teacher made us write 6 so far, so since I got zero on this one, it’s not going to be marked because it is not one of the 5 best essays I’ve written!
good to hear! im glad!
Hey Gabe,
That was a bold move. Glad you followed through with it - you never know what God has planned. Sounds like it turned out all right, you did the right thing and your final mark won’t be affected.
Cora Lynn! Nice to hear from you! Thanks for your encouragement!
Hey…wow, I haven’t been to read your blog in so long. I’ve missed out on all these great adventures of yours.
Hum…that’s a little weird. I bet the teacher was just trying to avoid a tricky issue (religion) by not grading yours. Maybe he thought you would cause him trouble if he gave you a bad grade, since you are so passionate about the topic. I don’t know. But I agree it was a legitimate subject, as much as any other topic. One of the defining characteristics of an “arguable” statement is that it cannot be proven one way or the other.
I like that you put your written note up. Cute.
