Today I went to the theatre with my dad. We saw the Pirates of the Carabeans: Dead Man’s Chest. It was good and probably even better than the first one. I was surprised by the good stuff I found. I guess they did not mean to make people think, but here are some things I saw that was actually really in line with the Bible.

  1. The two stupid pirates (I forget their names) are found in a small boat by themselves (again!) and the skinny one who loses his eye all the time is trying to read the Bible. The bigger guy thinks he’s stupid to read it since he doesn’t know how to read (and it’s upside down), but the skinny guy says that since they are mere mortals now, they should start to take care of their souls and their final destiny.
  2. At some point, Will is caught with a bunch of dead (but still alive) pirates on a different boat. This boat was captured by a dead(?) weird looking pirate who is extremely powerful and feared. This bad “man” asks the dead people he just caught and killed what he should do to them. He starts talking to one of them saying something like, “So, are you afraid of death? Aren’t you afraid of the last judgment? All your sins coming to light? And having to pay for all of them” and then he says, “Join me, if you don’t you’ll face death”. As he speaks to the pirates, they all become more and more afraid. One of them says he won’t join this bad man, he then disappears into a dark whirlwind to, hell we guess. Then an other one is so terrified that he joins.

This last picture is really good. It is not true that let’s say, “Satan” is sort of “mediating” with us when we die, and we get to choose where we end up, bound to his service forever, or meeting God at the judgement day and having to pay for our sins. No, not at all! There is only one mediator between men and God, Jesus. But this picture made me think of the end of the days, when we read in Daniel 8:23-25, “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigues, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes…” and in Revelation 13:16-17 (about the Beast), “He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead… “ I can’t find better passages right now, but it made me think about that. At the end, the Beast will perform many amazing things in the sight of men and will demand worship from them and will mark them with his number. Obviously he will demand that all join him, that way things would be better, people with the mark will be able to buy and so on. But if you don’t, you are plagued to suffer and die. The thing is that at the end, it is those in the Beast’s camp that are cursed, read Revelation 14:9-11.

I was surprised that I could clearly link these two pictures in the movie to reality, to the Bible. Again, I am not saying that the producers meant for Christians to recognize that and to move people to seek Jesus in the Bible to be saved from hell. But it seemed to be clear to me. Sorry for spiritualizing everything.
